Understanding Society

Tilburg University is convinced that it can contribute to solving social issues by developing and transferring knowledge and bringing together people from various disciplines and organizations.

The nature of the academic education at Tilburg University sets it apart from the so-called Rijksuniversiteiten ('state universities'). The university works on the principle of promoting and sustaining academic education and research with an open Catholic identity.

The Board of Governors oversees the objectives of the university and functions as a Supervisory Board. Its powers are largely delegated to the Executive Board, itself appointed by the Board of Governors. Staff and student participation in decision-making is embodied at a central level in the University Council, while at a decentralized level there are School Councils and one Services Council.

The Executive Board consults with the University Labour Representation Board, whose members include trade union representatives, with regard to all legal matters.

The primary processes of teaching, research, and valorization are taken care of by the five Schools of the university.
