Emile Aarts: onwards and upwards

Little wonder then that this professor emeritus of AI and Data Science continues to be involved in research and developments in his area of expertise. Outgoing professor Van Damme: Economics serves people
20th June 2023In economics, people are the focus, not economics, Eric van Damme argued in his farewell address on June 22. However, this message, which really should be obvious, is often forgotten in economic reporting, such as when it is stated that people should do things because it is good for the economy. Van Damme argues that this is because such reporting emphasizes macroeconomic aspects in which the human being behind the numbers is hidden, leading to a distorted picture.

12th June 2023Tilburg University’s Master in Finance has further strengthened its top 50 position in the ranking for best Finance programs in the world. This is evident from the 2023 results in the annual Masters in Finance ranking by Financial Times.

Audit quality can be improved by relatively minor interventions
05th June 2023Audit quality can be improved by giving difficult audit tasks more priority, promoting learning and innovation and a different mindset towards new technologies in auditing. This emerges from three studies by PhD student Christian Peters, which he will defend on Tuesday June 13, at Tilburg University.

Four Tilburg researchers receive NWO Open Competition SGW XS grant

Zero Hunger Lab and Kickstart AI join in deploying AI to increase food security
18th April 2023On Tuesday, April 18, 2023, Kickstart AI and Tilburg University’s Zero Hunger Lab signed a sponsorship agreement, laying the groundwork for further research into the applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to public domain data to better predict food insecurity and improve timely interventions.

Retailer price promotions increase waste awareness, not waste
30th March 2023Contrary to what is often assumed, retailer price promotions such as “Buy One, Get One” or quantity discounts in supermarkets do not cause more food to go to waste. In fact, such offers appear to increase consumer awareness of the risk of wasting food, which in turn spurs them on to prevent waste. Supermarkets could encourage such awareness-driven behavior by designing smart campaigns that help prevent waste.
