In his inaugural speech ‘When boundaries become barriers: management accounting at a turning point!’ Professor Bart Dierynck will consider what can be done to overcome the barrier between theory and practice and how as Professor of Management Accounting he can contribute to the effort.

Shifting the starting point of the deductible in healthcare insurance reduces healthcare costs
01st July 2021Under the Dutch Healthcare Insurance Act (Zorgverzekeringswet), everyone faces a mandatory deductible: people have to pay the first € 385 (in 2020) of their healthcare costs out of their own pocket. The purpose of the deductible is to make insured individuals aware of the costs of healthcare by having them pay some of these costs themselves. However, this deductible has a number of drawbacks. Having studied these as part of her PhD research, Minke Remmerswaal shows that other forms of cost-sharing schemes, such as shifted deductibles and co-insurance rates, are more effective. On July 2, she will defend her PhD thesis at Tilburg University.

Why employers would be wise to let their employees work from home during the corona pandemic?
07th June 2021The daily newspaper contain full-page ads from the Dutch government: ‘Work from home. We are getting better and better at it’. This appeal to companies to allow their employees to work from home is necessary since there are still many businesses that force their workers to come to the office, even though they can do their work equally well from home. Given public health concerns this ban is obviously an ill-advised decision. But the employers concerned clearly put their business interests first. But is that wise?
