Shanghai University of Finance and Economics celebrates its 100th year anniversary

On Saturday November 18th the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics in Shanghai, China, a partner university of Tilburg University, celebrated its 100th year anniversary. The date nearly coincided with the 90th year anniversary celebration on Thursday November 16th of Tilburg University. On behalf of Tilburg University Frans Greidanus, Advisor to the Executive Board, and Junwei Fu, Representative of Tilburg University in China, attended the Event. Speeches were held by several Government Officials and University representatives, including the Party Secretary, President, alumni and students. The event was attended by an audience of more than a thousand people and opened and concluded by songs from a large choir consisting of University alumni, students and staff.

The day preceding the celebration the “International University Presidents” Forum on Higher Education oriented towards the Future” was held.  University Presidents from China and partner Universities around the globe addressed topics like: new missions for Chinese Universities in the era of globalization, international relationships driven by higher education and social contributions through research.

The Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE)

The Shanghai University of Finance and Economics has its origin in a commercial program established at Nanjing Higher Normal School in 1917. In 1921 the program was extended and became the Shanghai College of Commerce. After a turbulent history the University it was given its present name in 1985. Today SUFE focuses on Economics, Management, Law and Humanities, very much resembling Tilburg University.
