Workshop “The Portrayal of Politics”

Political representation” means not only the representation of the people by authorized agency, but also the portrayal of political authority (or power, the state, the body politic) to those subject to it. However, in current political theory, the latter sense of representation receives much less attention than the former. What is involved in the portrayal of politics? How can it be imagined? How should it be conceptualized? What forms of political action does it involve? And how does it bear on the legitimacy of political authority? This workshop brings together historical and contemporary theoretical perspectives on this topic.

The papers will be pre-circulated. All participants are asked to read the papers in advance, as there will be only a brief introduction for each paper (10 minutes), followed by a commentary (10-15 minutes) and discussion (35-40 minutes).

Attendance is free of charge, but please register in advance to book lunch and to receive the papers. To register please contact Karineke Sombroek by 1 December: c.w.sombroek@phil.leidenuniv.nl
