Understanding the sociology and psychology of human actions

Department of Social Psychology

The Department of Social Psychology consists of a vibrant mix of people interested in Social, Economic and Work & Organizational Psychology.

1. Social psychology

Social psychology studies how the social environment influences human thought, emotion, and behavior. Because social influence is pervasive in almost everything people think, feel, and do, social psychology is a broad and increasingly multidisciplinary discipline. Three key areas in social psychology are:

  • social cognition
  • interpersonal relations
  • interactions within and between groups

2. Economic psychology

Economic psychology studies the psychological mechanisms that underlie consumption and other economic behaviors. It is an area where psychology and economics intersect. It deals with economic preferences, choices, decisions, and factors influencing these, as well as the consequences of economic decisions.

3. Work & Organizational psychology

Work & Organizational psychology centers on scientifically-based solutions to human problems in work and organisational settings. It aims to understand how to achieve one of the following objectives:

  • optimise performance
  • improve processes and relationships
  • enhance fairness and equity
  • increase subjective well-being
