Towards a digital society

During four years (2017-2020) the alumni network Vrienden van Cobbenhagen together with Tilburg University Society will invite an internationally renowned professor to share his or her views on developments in society. The Lecture is an active contribution to the international orientation of Dutch politics, research, education and business.

On Friday January 26, 2018 professor Viktor Mayer-Schönberger will give the second Vrienden van Cobbenhagen Lecture entitled 'Towards a digital society'. Viktor Mayer-Schönberger is professor Internet Governance and Regulation at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) of Oxford University. He is also connected to the Belfer Center of Science and International Affairs of Harvard University.

Mayer-Schönberger published ten books, among which the international bestseller 'Big Data', with  co-author Kenneth Cukier, that was published in over 20 languages. His book 'Delete: The Virtue of Forgetting in the Digital Age' received international awards. Viktor Mayer-Schönberger is author of over a hundred scientific articles and chapters. Together with Kenneth Cukier, he published the internation. He obtained degrees in Law in Salzburg and Harvard, in Economics at London School of Economics and is founder of Ikarus Software.

Besides the keynote of professor Viktor Mayer-Schönberger, the program consists of a lunch and speed date for students with the members of the Vrienden van Cobbenhagen. Furthermore, the Vrienden van Cobbenhagen Prize and Scholarship will be presented and the day will be concluded with drinks and networking.

The Vrienden van Cobbenhagen Prize is meant for a master thesis that is not only academically excellent, but also has societal relevance, whereby the findings of the student will have impact on the world around us. The award for the winner is an amount of 5.000 euros. With this, the student receives a contribution to fulfill their ambitions.

Last year Suzanne Hendricksen of Tilburg Law School (TLS) won the Cobbenhagen Prize of 5.000 euro for her master thesis ‘Zwijgrecht van het brein: Over de grenzen die het nemo tenetur-beginsel stelt aan neuroimaging bij onderzoek naar toerekeningsvatbaarheid.’ The jury praised her research theme and believed she treated the subject in a clear and methodological way.

The award for the winner is an amount of 10.000 euros. With this, the student receives a contribution to fulfill their ambitions.

Last year, Pearl van Lonkhuizen of Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (TSB) won the Scholarship of 10.000 euros for her bachelor thesis. According to the jury, she succeeded in possessing knowledge of both her own discipline (psychology) and other subjects. For example, besides her study, Pearl was a student assistent at the philosophy department. She is currently rewriting her thesis to a scientific publication.
