The problems of our world seem so large and complicated at times, that many people conclude that there is little that they can do to improve matters. Ken Surridge learnt in life that this is not true and that every person can help to make the world a better place.

Ken Surridge

Surridge (54) has lived in Africa, the US, and the UK, and found that no matter where you live, it is possible to exert influence for the better. So, for example, in South Africa, he opposed Apartheid by smuggling transcripts of Nelson Mandela's trial into the country from Zimbabwe, by refusing to use the whites-only canteen where he worked, and by taking white trainee teachers to black schools to challenge their preconceptions. Recently, after organizing a trip for students to Kenya, he has founded a student-led charity called Porridge and Rice to help break the cycle of poverty and deprivation through education by empowering schools in the Nairobi slums. The charity started by supporting 250 pupils in March 2014 and will support at least 2000 by the end of 2015. When organizing the original trip, he never imagined that it would result in 2000 slum children being supported daily with food, medical treatment, improved school facilities, hygiene programs and a lot more.
