Four women professors appointed at Tilburg University

Tilburg University has appointed four women professors within the framework of the Westerdijk Talent Scheme of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. That was announced on International Women’s Day by the VSNU (Association of Universities in the Netherlands). In eight years’ time, the percentage of women professors (as part of the total number of professors) at Tilburg University has risen from 11.4 % (2011) to 18.9 % (2017).

The Gender Unlimited Festival, which the university organizes every year on Women’s Day, focused on Connecting to Diversity. Rector Magnificus Emile Aarts: ‘Diversity is essential for a university. I hope that, one day, it will no longer be necessary to focus on issues like this.’

President of the Executive Board Koen Becking opened the Tilburg University Network for Women, which aims to equip women with tools that can advance their careers by exchanging knowledge and experience and sharing networks. He said that ‘this type of network can be very valuable for you, especially if you join it for a longer period of time.’

Guest speaker Resi Becker, Mail Nederland director at PostNL, elaborated on the Women Inclusive Network in her company and stressed the fact that the female role models at the top in her company are very important in stimulating the development of competences and confidence of women.

The four professors appointed at Westerdijk chairs are Marjolijn Antheunis (TSHD), Stéphanie van Gulijk (TLS), Jantine Schuit (TSB), and Sigrid Suetens (TiSEM).
