Let there be sun: Solar panels on the Library’s roof

Sustainability is structurally embedded in our business operations. We want to be courageous, take responsibility, and set the example on our campus. We therefore reduce our carbon footprint as much as we can and actively contribute to solutions. For instance on the roof of the University Library.

The measures we take are not always clearly visible. One of the less visible steps that has been worked hard on in the past two weeks is the new solar panels on the flat roof of the Library. There are now three buildings on campus with solar panels: CUBE, Olympia, and now the Library. In total, there are now 632 solar panels on the Library’s roof. They generate an estimated average of 225 MWh (225,000 kWh) annually.

Alumni worked on the project

A fun fact is that two former Tilburg University Supply Chain Management graduates also worked on this project to make our campus more sustainable: Bas Heijmans and Lau van der Kaa. Bas: “Lau and I are thrilled to be working on this project, especially because it is for the same university where we successfully completed the Supply Chain Management program. We have come full circle!” They were briefly on the campus last week. “Before we went on the roof, we walked through the University Library where we slaved away to pass our Master's exams. It is a real milestone for us to be applying all that knowledge in practice for a greener and more sustainable world.”
