Josette Dijkhuizen appointed endowed professor Sustainable employability of entrepreneurs
02nd May 2022As of May 1, 2022, Tilburg University has appointed Prof. Josette Dijkhuizen as an endowed professor of 'Sustainable employability of entrepreneurs in the Netherlands'. Her research focuses on critical events in the personal and working lives of entrepreneurs, potential causes of dropout and possible preventive interventions.

Tilburg University partner in Gravitation research program 'The Algorithmic Society’
02nd May 2022Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf of Education, Culture and Science has awarded 21.3 million euros under NWO's Gravitation program to the project 'The Algorithmic Society' of a consortium of five universities led by the University of Amsterdam. Tilburg Law School is a co-applicant and bears responsibility for one of the three areas of research in the project, the judiciary.

ERC Advanced grant for research on improving the domestic prosecution of international crimes
26th April 2022The European Research Council of the EU has awarded an ERC Advanced research grant of 2,3 million euros to Prof. of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Elies van Sliedregt of Tilburg University. She will develop parameters for a coordinated system of global justice at the domestic level.

Children learn second language words better through more involvement with robots
14th April 2022When children interact with robots over a long period of time, they inevitably develop a relationship with them. Mirjam de Haas investigated how this relationship and involvement with the robot can change over time due to the robot's behavior. More familiarity with the robot leads to better learning performance in the long run. De Haas will receive her doctorate on April 20.

Diversity research can learn from the mistakes made by the field of International Business
22nd March 2022The field of International Business (IB) has flourished in an era of unprecedented globalization. But we now live in a time of de-globalization, and the discourse has shifted from differences between countries to differences within countries, leading to an increasing focus on diversity. At the same time old mistakes threaten to be repeated. Where previously IB emphasized the positive aspects of internationalization, now the mantra is that “diversity is good”. In the valedictory address delivered by Prof. Niels Noorderhaven on March 25, he will argue that diversity research can learn from the mistakes made by the field of IB.

EU funds research project CircoMod EU for modeling the circular economy to mitigate climate change
21st March 2022With increasing populations and expanding wealth, global material consumption has seen a precipitous increase. These materials are often discarded after use (the so-called linear model). Moreover, the massive use and production of materials are also associated with the extensive use of energy. The emissions from structural materials are often difficult to decarbonise. As such, high levels of material consumption pose a major challenge for meeting climate targets. In this context, the circular economy (CE) has been presented as an alternative to the current linear model.

EU funds research project BOLSTER to improve understanding of marginalized communities in the climate transition

Contact with peers helps victims to reinvent themselves

With support from the Dutch Victim Support Network (Slachtofferhulp Nederland), Pien van de Ven therefore investigated the role of both support from the social environment and from fellow-sufferers in dealing with a victim experience.

Tilburg University and NRC Handelsblad launch crowdsourcing project
09th February 2022Starting today, NRC Handelsblad and Tilburg University are inviting garden owners across the country to leave a small piece of their garden well alone for four seasons. This means let all weeds grow, let fallen leaves and branches be, no watering, etc. Participants will discover what happens in this piece of garden and what it does to themselves. Researchers from Tilburg University will analyze the data that participants share, and the newspaper will report on this.

Tilburg University to award three honorary doctorates during dies natalis
04th February 2022Three American scientists will receive honorary doctorates from Tilburg University on June 16, 2022, during its dies natalis. Mary E. Barth (Professor of Accounting at Stanford University) and Christine Moorman (Professor of Marketing at Duke University) will both receive an honorary doctorate from the Tilburg School of Economics and Management. Prof. James Gross (Professor of Psychology at Stanford University) receives an honorary doctorate from the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The honorary doctorates are conferred upon them because of their exceptional academic achievements.

They also more often suffer from general mental health problems and lower coping self-efficacy levels.
