Program and courses Econometrics and Operations Research BSc

In the Bachelor’s program in Econometrics and Operations Research, you will learn how to create mathematical and statistical models in relation to the most challenging problems in economics and business. You will then learn how to use and apply these models to reach the most optimal solutions. If you are good at economics, mathematics and statistics, and if you thrive on solving real problems by thinking analytically and logically, then you will excel in this program.

Program structure and content

This program was designed for students who have an aptitude for mathematics and are enthusiastic about applying mathematics to real-life problems. This is reflected in the curriculum of the program. You will first learn the basics of mathematical and statistical theories. Then you will build on these basics by learning how to design mathematical models and by performing the necessary analyses to help a company or organization thrive.

Unique in the Econometrics and Operations Research program is the Improving Society Lab EOR. During year one and two a series of lectures will allow you to immerse yourself in the real-life applications of Econometrics and Operations Research, and practice this yourself. In the third year you can choose from a wide range of courses in the field of Business Analytics and Operations Research, Econometrics and Mathematical Economics, Quantitative Finance and Actuarial Science.

First Year Content

The first year of Econometrics and Operations Research is divided in four units. Throughout the year, you study a combination of subjects focused on mathematics, and subjects focused on economics and business.

Right from the start, you will also take part in the Improving Society Lab, where you will discover that Econometrics and Operations Research can really improve society in an essential way. The Improving Society Lab for EOR will show you the range of careers which are open to you as a graduate from this program.

Second Year Content

From the second year on, the program switches to a semester system. In addition to the mathematical and statistical courses, there is room for a number of courses which provide an orientation to the quantitative Master's programs at Tilburg University.

You will develop important skills in the course Communication and Information Skills. The Improving Society Lab EOR  will continue to run alongside the main curriculum.

Third Year Content

 In the third year, there is a lot to choose from:

  • In semester 1 and 2 you can choose a total of 5 compulsory optional courses that follow the three main fields of econometrics (at least 1 course per field):
    • Econometrics and Mathematical Economics (courses such as Auctions, Bargaining and Networks, Game and Economics Behavior, and Econometrics for Policy Analysis)
    • Business Analytics and Operations Research (courses such as Combinatorial Optimization, Inventory and Production Management, and Operations Research Methods)
    • Quantitative Finance and Actuarial Science (courses such as Life Insurance, Quantitative Finance).
  • You can additionally take a free elective, which allows you to further deepen or broaden your knowledge.
  • You can choose to go on exchange and follow subjects at a partner institution of Tilburg University.

Bachelor's thesis

You finalize your third year by writing your Bachelor’s thesis: the final research project to crown your Bachelor’s degree.

Study abroad: going on exchange

We encourage all students to gain international experience. A popular and very exciting option is to go abroad on exchange. As an exchange student, you study at one of the many international partner universities of Tilburg University, typically for one semester.

The Study Abroad & Exchange Office of Tilburg University will be available to help you research the opportunities within your study program and a dedicated Study Abroad & Exchange Coordinator will be advising you before, during and after your exchange.

Most students will be eligible for a grant or scholarship to financially support them during their exchange experience. Additional grants for students with special needs or a difficult financial situation are also available.
