"It is not only the program of Liberal Arts and Sciences that influenced my perceptions, but also the amazing people I met and became friends with during my study. The program teaches about all different kind of academic disciplines and issues. The persons let me become familiar with different cultures and approaches. As in the study of Liberal Arts and Sciences these two things are at once combined, the interdisciplinary and international approach that Tilburg University wants to reach is complete. "

Fascinated by other countries all over the world

My name is Kelly van Gils and I do not have an exotic background like many of the Liberal Arts and Sciences students. I was just born and raised in the Netherlands. However, I have always been fascinated by other countries all over the world. I travelled extensively through Europe when I was in high school and before I decided to start the Liberal Arts and Sciences program, I travelled to Indonesia to do volunteers work. During this period, I lived together with 20 people who all had different nationalities and backgrounds. It was a great experience and I liked being around people who all have different cultures and customs. I liked being in an international setting so much that when I came back in the Netherlands, I could not wait to get started at Tilburg University.

It just felt right

In the first place I chose Tilburg University because it just felt right. I went there a couple of times before I applied for the program of Liberal Arts and Sciences and thought there was a nice atmosphere. Moreover, the program encourages you to study abroad for a semester in your third year. As it was possible to get a high level of education in an international setting close to my home, with the opportunity to go abroad for half a year, the decision was made fairly quickly.

Broad ranges of study associations

Already during my first weeks in Tilburg I discovered that there are actually many more reasons to choose to study in Tilburg. For example the broad ranges of study associations that will help you to take the best out of your studies and organize not only study related activities but also drinks and other fun activities.

The different courses taught me how to see connections between different academic fields

In my second year, I started the major Business and Management and as I reflect upon that year I can only say that the program of Liberal Arts and Sciences meets the expectations I had. The different courses we had were challenging. They taught me how to see connections between different academic fields and also helped me to develop my communication and presentation skills.

Because we are with such a small group, it is possible to really take part in the lecture

I realize that we are extremely lucky to be in small classes with sometimes even less than twenty people. Because we are with such a small group, it is possible to really take part in the lecture. Therefore, it was also possible to have debates and discussions during the lectures, and once even in the town hall of the city of Tilburg.

It is important to practice your skills in real-life situations

The debates and discussions were always provocative and taught us to utilize our unique qualities. I think that it is important not only to learn from books but also to practice your skills in real-life situations in which you will eventually end up in. This is not only nice for the students, but also for lecturers who get a lot of response while they are teaching. Therefore the teachers spare no pains in involving us in lectures which thus include these debates and even organizing excursions to different cities in or close to the Netherlands to do practical assignments.

The opportunity to compare different academic fields and focuses

Unfortunately also books need to be read and exams need to be made. It nevertheless remains a real study. In the first semester courses are mainly about general academic knowledge, but in the second semester the students are given the opportunity to compare different academic fields. My first main focus was on the major 'Law in Europe' but as the year went by I found out that I liked 'Business and Management' better. It is also possible to combine different fields. For me this contains that I will probably combine Business and Management together with environmental issues like forest and nature conservation.

Solutions to problems in our global society will be found more easily

There is no specific major that contains only environmental issues but it is needless to say that it also includes connections with law, social issues and other focuses. In the program of Liberal Arts and Sciences also these different focuses will always be emphasized even after you have chosen your major program. It is important to keep such an open mind so that connections are made. By making these overlaps of scientific disciplines, solutions to problems in our global society will be found more easily as you will take into account more factors instead of just the one you're focusing on.

Not only the program influenced my perceptions, but also the amazing people I met and became friends with during my study

Finally, there is actually only one more thing that I would like to say. It is not only the program of Liberal Arts and Sciences that influenced my perceptions, but also the amazing people I met and became friends with during my study. The program teaches about all different kind of academic disciplines and issues. The persons let me become familiar with different cultures and approaches. As in the study of Liberal Arts and Sciences these two things are at once combined, the interdisciplinary and international approach that Tilburg University wants to reach is complete. For now, I think I can only hope for more amazing experiences to come in the next years.
