The Education Bazaar is the annual education event that connects Tilburg University students and teachers. It is an informal platform to discover innovations together, identify best practices, and share knowledge and experiences. This year’s theme is Role Models With Character.

Who is your significant role model, and why this particular person? And how can the university help you to become the future employee, teacher or researcher you want to be? Come to this festive event and give a boost to educational innovation!

We offer a varied program consisting of one plenary session, several parallel sessions, Connection Tables, and an information exchange fair. Here’s a glimpse of what we have in store for you:

  • Wouter Sanderse (who did his PhD on Character Education) will give an interactive lecture on character building in education.
  • Several students and lecturers will present their best practices.
  • Visitors may opt to connect with Human Library books and other role models.
  • At the close of the event, the Best Lecturer Award, the Best Master’s Thesis Award, the Best Research Master’s Thesis Award and the Teaching Innovation Prize will be presented.

Interactive contribution

Last year, a total 500 students and teachers attended the event. Next to amusement, they also got to know more about our Educational Vision and we collected input to improve our education. We will continue this approach this year, with a strong focus on discussion. The presenters and session leaders will introduce the general content, but you will be able to give direction to the topics by means of your interactive contribution. Will you be there?

Connection tables

Ninety years ago, Tilburg University was founded. Our 90th anniversary calls for a special celebration. To stay with theme of our anniversary: 90 years of connecting people and knowledge we invented Connection Tables. Several Role Models will take place at different tables. All students and staff members can join a table (or several tables) of their interest. To stimulate the connection, everybody receives three business cards on arrival. These cards can be exchanged in the course of the day and especially during this connection tables, so hopefully many new connections will be made.

Drinks, food and entertainment

There will be a varied side program, including live entertainment and  food trucks with coffee, typically Dutch ‘stroopwafels’, Mediterranean Mezze, Fresh smoothies and Vietnamese Spring Rolls.

Towards a Student-Centric University

Presented by: University Forum

University Forum (Tilburg University student participation body) would like to see the university focusing on the student and has proposed introducing the concept of Student Centricity. This is a broad concept, the core message being that students’ interests should be at the heart of policy and decision-making processes that involve students (facilities, educational development). This will mean a change in approach since all students should have the feeling that the university is at their service. In this session, University Forum wants to share its views and enter into a debate with teachers, students, and support staff about this new approach at Tilburg University.

Wouter Sanderse: Are we educating a society of 'smart fools'?

Presented by: Wouter Sanderse

Around the world, IQ's have risen 30 points in the 20th century. One question is whether this means that people have actually become more intelligent. The question that I focus on here is whether being smart may not be a bad thing as well: can intelligence not just as well be used for bad or trivial purposes, if we don't equip people with skills and attitudes to make the world a better place? In this talk, I will argue that being smart is not so positive it if isn't moderated by practical wisdom, a notion with ancient roots that is still very relevant today. We will examine what practical wisdom is, how it is related to having moral character, and how to cultivate it in the university.

Session 1: Develop your Critical Thinking Skills by means of Visual Thinking Strategies

Presented by: Visual Thinking Strategies Nederland


In collaboration with Academic Forum, Visual Thinking Strategies Nederland offers a short introduction to the method of Visual Thinking Strategies. Improve your academic skills by making use of art. Look at a piece of art in a small group. What do you see? And what do the others see? You watch from your own perspective, but also through the eyes of others. In this way, you experience that your own view is just as valid as that of the next person and that we all look at art with our own brain. Not only at art, but also at a patient, a court case, or a company. If you look closely, calmly and with other people, you will see more.

You will learn:

  • to better empathize with others and to enter each other’s worlds;
  • to argue boldly, based on factual evidence;
  • to see connections and discover details in complex information;
  • to think out of the box;
  • to review or expand your opinion based on arguments.

Session 2: Teacher of the Year Award, debate among the nominees (and with the audience)

Presented by: Student Party SAM


After the nominees of the Teacher of the Year Award have been introduced and have held a mini lecture during the plenary session, they will enter into a debate with each other and the audience during this parallel session on three topical and challenging issues concerning the education at our university, for instance

  • If it was possible for students to pay per course, would this translate into more participation and higher pass rates?
  • Higher education must become more accessible (given the admission requirements, financial effects of the abolition of the basic student grant).
  • Preparation for the job market should play a larger role in the curriculums at universities, for instance, in the form of an internship without study delay and more guest lecturers.

Session 3: Do it differently: Poster presentations instead of exams

Presented by: Joris Hulstijn (TiSEM)


At TiSEM, an 'Academic Competencies' course has recently been introduced, as part of which students had to write a term paper. Organizing presentations for 28 teams would be impossible, but Joris Hulstijn wanted to stimulate an academic discussion. He had good experiences with poster sessions for small groups. But would it work for large groups, too?

He gave instructions about what makes a good poster and discussed the large number of tutorials available online. All 28 teams managed to present a poster. The posters turned out to be well-designed and attractive. The atmosphere was lively and quite noisy. Indeed, students critically discussed each other’s work. In this way, he found out that poster presentations are a good way to evaluate academic work. Will this become the new trend in course evaluation? Is it also suitable for formal evaluation?

Session 4: Experiments in entrepreneurship education – Adding "verticals" to the Minor in Entrepreneurship

Presented by: Tilburg Center of Entrepreneurship, Dr. James Small


Because students can take one, two, or all three courses, they may miss key entrepreneurial skills and knowledge of topics or there is redundancy / repetition as they receive similar material and discussions in more than one course. This poses a challenge in a coherent minor such as that in Entrepreneurship.This academic year (2017-2018), we are running an experiment to see if we can introduce “verticals” into the minor in entrepreneurship to allow all students to receive consistent trainings in 3 core entrepreneurial skills irrespective of which course (or combination of courses) they take.

This brings with it pedagogical and organizational challenges such as: selecting and designing the verticals to introduce, the (dis)integration of them in the existing separate courses, and the organizational issues of planning activities and team work across three courses simultaneously. Session 5: How to create more appreciation for education

Presented by: Suzan van der Aa


More appreciation for education, that is what the Executive Board, the University Labor Representation Board (Lokaal Overleg), and the University Council want, and it is what outgoing Education Minister Jet Bussemaker wants as well.
The conclusions of a seminar on the appreciation of education were further discussed with the vice-deans of Education. The following actions will be taken (when deans agree and HR advises positively), starting from September:

  1. Creation of a four-year contract for junior teachers;
  2. Development of a prestigious curriculum for the intermediate group of teachers. Faculties support ambitious candidates for leadership and / or innovation in education;
  3. Proposal for a system of permanent education.

These actions are the core of a new policy for more appreciation for teaching that will be developed. We invite everyone to join and contribute to the discussion.

Session 6: Brabant Robot Challenge: Organizing a multidisciplinary course with other institutions

Presented by: Robbert Coenmans


The Brabant Robot Challenge was an initiative in which Tilburg University joined forces with Eindhoven University of Technology and Fontys and Avans Universities of Applied Sciences to get students to learn more about robots in healthcare. Around 40 students from backgrounds ranging from electrical engineering to accounting to health care studies participated in the initiative. While organizing the Brabant Robot Challenge, a lot of challenges where involved surrounding the material, organization, and location. We developed a model to help multiple institutions of higher education and their students to work together. It can be used for all kinds of projects. We want to explain how we did it and how it works, in order to get you inspired as well.

Session 7: What your role models say about you!

Presented by: Tilburg Model United Nations, Stef Keulers and Suzi Rostomyan.


Tilburg Model United Nations is striving to teach students such communication skills as speaking in public, presenting, and debating: important communication skills for students' development and future careers. However, do communication guidelines that apply at work and in our families also make sense for the politicians and world leaders we consider to be our role models? After all, how much do we know about their communication skills and about the way these affect us? The question is whether we will still consider these figures our role models after an in–depth and revealing analysis of their communication skills, a question that will be put to the test during our workshop with the help of the participants.

Session 8: Get out of your bubble, meet your prejudice!

Presented by: Mark Brandt (Academic Forum/Human Library)


In his work, Brandt finds that seeing someone as dissimilar leads to prejudice and that this is true for many people. Even people’s good intentions and openness do not seem to help. This means that we cannot rely on our good intentions if we want to reduce prejudice. This may sound rather depressing, but there is hope. Research has also shown that getting to know people with different views and perspectives and working with those people can break down these walls and increase tolerance. How do you break down the walls of prejudice? Find out during the presentation by Mark Brandt.

Session 9: What is YOUR real contribution?

Presented by: Hein Fleuren


In this session, we are going to discuss with the audience the topic of the purpose of knowledge and skills. Knowledge and skills are the first two aspects of Tilburg University’s educational vision. But how do we apply our knowledge? How and for what do we use our skills? In my opinion, character can guide that for a large part. If we are able to let our students and teachers reflect on why we take certain decisions or make certain choices, we have made a big step, for ourselves as persons and as a university, but also for society.

In this session, I will bring forward some examples of why we need 'character' in my area of expertise. I will show what we have done in a recently set-up class on the character aspect ("Professional Business Analytics Skills"). I also hope to learn from the discussion because I am very positive about this development in Tilburg and also because I welcome input to improve next year’s class.

Session 10: Diggit Magazine: From an educational tool to a niche magazine

Diggit Magazine is a bilingual community-driven academic news and information platform connected to the Department of Culture Studies at Tilburg University. It provides quality information in times of digitalization, globalization, and superdiversity.

Diggit Magazine is not only a niche magazine but also a central tool in the program of Online Culture: Arts, Media & Society and in the Culture Studies Master. It is a new learning environment and a new learning tool that is integral to the entire curriculum. Students, researchers, lecturers, visiting researchers, and guest lecturers work together to form an online learning community. Session 11: A reality check of your 21st century skills

During this interactive workshop, participants can test their skills by means of challenging propositions: what are the 21st century skills and to what extent are my skills up-to-date? Session 12: Tilburg University encourages entrepreneurship: Combining studies & start-ups
