Courses after the State Exam

Dutch as a Second Language Very Advanced Writing and Grammar

10x 3-hour classes, 8 hours self-study per week, 6 ECTS

Writing skills are emphasized in this course. During ten classroom sessions, you will work on an essay of approx. four to five pages on a subject of your own choice and based on a previously determined outline. Complicated grammar is refreshed and discussed more thoroughly, such as use of verb tenses and the word ‘er’.

A number of forms of cooperative writing are discussed during the classroom sessions. You will also receive a weekly writing exercise as homework. You will then check your completed homework on your own using correction symbols and/or you will receive feedback from your instructor. You can rewrite your text based on this commentary. Texts can be both for business and personal use. Much attention is paid to clarity and style: how formal should you be in a text?

By the end of the course, you will have practiced writing an article for your company newsletter, a letter of complaint and a formal report.

Dutch as a Second Language Very Advanced Conversational Skills and Pronunciation

10x 3-hour classes, 8 hours self-study per week, 6 ECTS

Conversational skills are emphasized in this course. You will work on 1 to 2-minute talks during the ten classroom sessions toward an (argumentative) final presentation. You will also work on your pronunciation based on an individual pronunciation diagnosis. This includes sounds, stress and intonation. This part of the course uses the computer program and book ‘Nu versta ik je!’.

Aspects such as stress, melody and the rhythm of the language, which are important for everyone, are worked on in the traditional method. You will work individually on those aspects that are relevant for you.

At the end of the course, you will be able to give a talk, you are aware of your own weaknesses with regard to sounds and intonation and you know how to improve. Note: daily practice is required to ensure progress.
