Admission requirements
Before applying, please make sure that you meet the following requirements:
- You have a Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, such as general Communication Studies, Linguistics, or a modern language. Students with a Bachelor's degree in a different subject are most welcome to apply, but we strongly recommend that you consult us in advance for advice.
- An adequate knowledge of English is required. Please send us a certified copy of ONE of the following English proficiency tests: Academic IELTS (min. 6.5 overall/6.0 on parts), TOEFL (min. paper-based: 577, computer-based: 233, internet-based: 90; the TOEFL Institutional Code for Tilburg University is 9860) or Cambridge Proficiency Examination.
The English proficiency tests must be less than two years old at the time of application.
You are exempt from an English test:
- If you are a native English speaker, i.e. if you are a citizen of one of the following countries: Australia, Canada (with exception of Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States of America.
- If you completed all your secondary education in English. This only applies to scholars from the following countries: Australia, Canada (with exception of Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States of America.
- If you completed all your university education in English. This only applies to scholars from the following countries: Australia, Canada (with exception of Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States of America.
- If you have an IB or EB diploma with English as the language of instruction.
Application and selection procedure
The Admissions Committee handles applications on an individual basis. They will make a decision on the basis of the documents you have sent in. You will receive a letter of notification informing you of their decision as soon as possible. Based on their decision, you can either:
- start immediately if you meet the requirements;
- start later, if you still need to meet additional requirements.
Decision deadline
The Admissions Committee will make a decision within six weeks. The decision of the Admissions Committee is a binding decision. There is only any sense in contacting the committee again if you have additional information that may have a positive influence on the decision.

Application package for admissions
The first step of the application and selection procedure, or Stage 2, is to submit an application package. Your application package must contain the following documents:
- A printed and completed application form, signed and dated by you.
- Certified/ authenticated copies of your diploma(s) and grade list(s). If you have not obtained your diploma yet, please enclose a certified copy of your most recent grade list(s). If your diploma(s) and grade list(s) are not already in English, Dutch, French or German, you will need to provide a sworn translation into English of these documents.
- A copy of your Bachelor’s thesis or a comparable essay, or a dedicated research proposal* (in English or Dutch).
- An academic IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge Proficiency Examination certificate. For more information, check the website www.toefl.org or www.ielts.org.
- Your letter of motivation.
- Your Curriculum Vitae.
- Three photocopies of your currently valid passport.
- Chinese applicants only: Nuffic (formerly NESO) certificate. For information on how to obtain a Nuffic certificate, please visit the Nuffic website.
- Two independent letters of reference (for students who wish to be considered for the Tilburg University Scholarship for Academic Excellence (TUSAE) or the Tilburg School of Humanities Scholarship (TSHS). For further information regarding eligibility requirements for both the TSHS and TUSAE, please clickhere.
*Regarding sending a writing sample: you could send us also another essay or writing assignment which you have completed during your studies. It should be a serious piece of writing which reflects your current writing abilities and demonstrates an adequate knowledge of your field of study; the piece should be at least 2000 words long.

Application deadlines
Please ensure that you submit your application in good time, even if you have not yet made up your mind whether you want to do the programme or not. That way you will receive the admission documents with plenty of time to spare.
