Anne van Mierlo's answers to the following questions:

What is your educational background? (secondary school and Bachelor’s degree)

After I finished my pre-university secondary education (VWO), I started the Bachelor’s program ‘Economie en Bedrijfseconomie’ (Economics and Business Economics) at Tilburg University.

Since the mathematical part of this Bachelor’s program interested me the most, I continued with a Pre-Master’s in Econometrics and Operations Research, after which I started the Master’s in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics.

Why did you choose Tilburg University?

I participated in the Student for a Day program to get an impression of what studying at Tilburg University was like. The personal contacts and good atmosphere during this day and the green and relatively small campus were the aspects that appealed to me most.

Another important factor was that the Bachelor’s programs at Tilburg School of Economics and Management were highly noted in several international rankings.

What was the reason to choose your specific Master’s program?

The Master’s program in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics was the one that suited my background in Economics best. It included modelling and analytical tools based on economic theory, and I liked the focus on mathematics in the teaching of economics.

The small scale of the Master’s program, leading to close contact with professors and other students both from the Netherlands and abroad, was a further attractive feature.

What is special about the program?

This Master’s program permits specialization in the direction of your choice, given the freedom to choose subjects in your own field of interest. I personally chose several courses in the field of Quantitative Marketing.

I have learned about empirical methods and models that are needed for the analysis of large amounts of data, which provides a good basis for a career in “big data” – a trendy specialty nowadays.

What do you think about Tilburg University campus and facilities?

Tilburg University campus is green and relatively small, which I like. All buildings are close together and the campus is near the train station, a supermarket and the university sports center. The campus includes a variety of study locations, areas where you can meet other students, several restaurants and a café where you can have a meal or a drink.

I also like the scope for extracurricular activities, and I would really recommend other students to take advantage of them. I have had several jobs as a student assistant, and have become active in mentoring freshmen as part of the MAK Mentorship system.

What has your experience of the program and Tilburg University been so far?

My experiences with the program and Tilburg University are really good. I have developed in several ways and have learned a lot.

I made some good friends and really feel at home at Tilburg University. I am glad I decided to study at Tilburg University after I left secondary school.

What do you think of Tilburg as a city?

I think Tilburg is a real student city. All shops, restaurants, clubs etc. in the city center are located relatively close to each other and there are lots of outdoor events, sports facilities, opportunities for parties and other activities such as Festival Mundial, Student Sounds, the Hart van Brabantloop relay race and Tilburg Culinair. Finally, it is relatively cheap and easy to find student housing.

What are your career aspirations?

I would like to work for one or more big companies where I can use my analytical and modelling skills to gain important insights, preferably in the field of customer intelligence.

That is my personal preference, but this Master’s program offers graduates a wide range of other career possibilities to match their own ambitions.
