"I really enjoyed the openness of faculty at Tilburg University. Especially after having studied in Vienna, where the entire interaction with faculty is extremely formal, it was really nice to have such direct contact and support of professors."

Matej Misik's answers to the following questions:

Can you describe what your current position involves?

I work for a company focused on delivering innovative, sustainable products and services, mainly in telecommunication and banking. The company is part of a much larger international consultancy and was created specifically as a “playground” for new ideas. I’m there to help create the ideas, bring them through a proof-of-concept stage, and prepare them to become real products / services. Probably closest to strategic business consulting.

Is this your first position after graduation? If not, what did you do before?

Yes, this is my first position after graduation. During my Bachelor studies in Vienna, I worked for a pharmaceuticals company in Vienna and Moscow and ran a small gallery / café in Bratislava.

How did you get in touch with this company?

I was quite lucky. I had known the CEO for a while so when he heard I had finished my studies, he called me with a job offer.

What was the defining moment in your studies?

That was when I had arranged for my Master’s thesis to be written in cooperation with the endocrinology department of the AMC hospital in Amsterdam and Prof. Boone of Tilburg University had agreed to supervise my thesis. The collaboration between an economic and medical group of people was lots of fun.

How do you use the knowledge gained at Tilburg University in your job?

Due to my work in regulated sectors such as telecommunications and banking, the economic fundamentals of regulation come in handy. However, I would like to shift more of my professional attention to healthcare, as regulatory issues that I touched upon in my Tilburg University thesis are and will be extremely interesting.

Does your career so far meet the expectations you had as a student?

Absolutely, it may not be as academic as I would like, but at least I have a great reason to pursue a PhD :)

What has surprised you about your Master's program?

I especially enjoyed the openness of faculty at Tilburg University. Especially after having studied in Vienna, where the entire interaction with faculty is extremely formal, it was really nice to have such direct contact and support of professors.

What is your ambition?

I would love to start a PhD within the coming few years that builds upon my Master’s studies at Tilburg University. Professionally I would like to start a business of my own. I have some cool ideas, so let’s see :)

What or who gives you inspiration and why?

On a business level, it has to be Elon Musk. I really like his push for sustainable business and for a basic principal approach to problems. On a personal and social level, I am highly inspired by the great work done by organizations such as MSF and doctors all around the world in general. Having written my Master’s thesis with a team of doctors in a hospital, I have become fascinated with and inspired by the healthcare sector.

Do you have any advice for current students?

Really focus on econometrics, math and statistics ;) They are all over the place and are really useful. Data analysts and scientists are already in short supply and with more and more companies relying heavily on data, specialists in this field of expertise are likely to be in even greater demand.
