What was the defining moment in your study?

There were two major milestones during the course of my studies. The first one was at the end of my high school when I decided to study business. Ever since primary school I believed I would study mathematics, which eventually did not happen. The second milestone is when I decided to specialize in Investments and chose a program at Tilburg University. These two together were decisive factors affecting the choice of my career.

How do you use the knowledge gained at Tilburg University in your job?

My Master's program at Tilburg University helped me a lot to understand and value various types of investments. As in every-day work I value different types of companies and investments, understanding commonalities and differences in approaches we apply in these various situations is crucial. Recently I was engaged in valuing a mining company and the knowledge I gained in the area of Real Options while studying at Tilburg helped me a lot. This is only one of the various examples demonstrating how knowledge obtained at Tilburg University helps me perform my job better. In essence, education we receive at the university is like a building the foundation - it provides a strong basis for the further process of constructing and upgrading a much broader set of skills and knowledge later on during our professional life.

Does your current job meet the expectations you had as a student?

My Master's program offered a broad spectrum of finance subjects, ranging from corporate finance to derivatives and risk management. Obtaining a diverse background in these various topics allowed me to understand what I personally find interesting and would want to work on as a professional. At the same time, the quantity of the teachings was never at the expense of the quality. Lecturers went into depth of their subjects and this is what I truly appreciate.

Did you participate in extracurricular activities and if so, how did this contribute to your personal development?

I participated in extracurricular activities more often during my bachelor program than during my master program. I find extracurricular activities extremely important; they help you develop as individual not only on a professional level, but also on an interpersonal level. I learned at my job that interpersonal skills are as important as technical skills. Moreover, being involved in more than one activity at the same time develops ones organizational skills as well.

Do you have any advice for current students?

It is very important to "find" yourself. If you are not sure what exactly is that you want to do, don't be afraid to experiment. All these experiences will be valuable, regardless of whether you eventually choose to pursue a career in that particular field. I learned this from my own example and I do not regret it for a moment.
