Master Student István Zörényi

“The program gave me what I expected, provided a good balance between business and technology-related content. We were required to do a good number of group assignments, which is useful because, in our professional lives, we also have to frequently collaborate with others to complete our tasks. Tilburg University has a good reputation with employers. As a result, I managed to get an internship already at the end of the first semester.”

István Zörényi's answers to the following questions:

What is your background?

I was born in Hungary and lived there until 2013. I have a Bachelor’s degree in export-import management from Budapest Business School and a post-graduate degree in energy management from Corvinus University of Budapest.

Working in an international environment was not new to me before I enrolled in this Master’s program, as I had completed an Erasmus semester in Venlo (NL) before. I had also worked for a multinational company for the preceding four years.

Why did you choose Tilburg University?

I first looked at the courses Tilburg University offered because it is a partner institution of the university where I had studied before. I was glad that Information Management was an option, and after a friend of mine confirmed that the city of Tilburg is also a good place to live, I sent in my application.

What was the reason to choose your specific Master’s program?

After finishing my Bachelor’s program, I worked for a few years as a system and process specialist for a large multinational company, on the interface between business and IT.

I found this area most interesting and, to be more successful in that domain, I felt that I needed to add a stable theoretical foundation to my practical knowledge and experience.

Enrolling in the Information Management Master’s program appeared to be an excellent opportunity to reach my goal and, now that I am at the end of the program, I am satisfied with my choice.

What is special about the program?

In addition to the standard courses which dive deep into different areas of information management, the program provides a seminar course which I would label as an eye opener, especially the autumn semester.

I think that this seminar gives good insight into the present-day challenges information management faces, and helps students to identify what area of this discipline they would like to focus on for their thesis, or after finishing the program.

What was your first impression when you arrived at Tilburg University?

I liked that campus a lot; it is located in a nice environment with a lot of green surface. On Arrival Day (and also afterwards), everything was well organized and it was easy to find my way.

What do you think about the Tilburg University campus and its facilities?

The campus is located in a nice, green environment. I think it creates a good atmosphere. The facilities are excellent.

The university provides the space and equipment to collaborate on group assignments and also silent study rooms if you want to prepare for an exam or lecture without others talking around you.

What are your experiences with the program and Tilburg University so far?

The program gave me what I expected, provided a good balance between business and technology-related content. We were required to do a good number of group assignments, which is useful because, in our professional lives, we also have to frequently collaborate with others to complete our tasks.

Tilburg University has a good reputation with employers. As a result, I managed to get an internship already at the end of the first semester. The program management collected our ideas on a regular basis. I was happy to see that our comments were translated into actions and I am glad that, for the next group of students, this program will be even better.

What do you think of Tilburg city?

Tilburg is a nice city to study in: you can get from one place to another by bike easily in less than 20 minutes. Lots of events are organized, especially for students and otherwise. As to internship or job opportunities, I have to add that, for international students, there are limited opportunities within the city, but as Eindhoven is not too far away (25-30 minutes by train), it is possible to get an internship position without having to travel too much.

What are your career aspirations?

I am doing an internship with Philips in Eindhoven until the end of the summer. We will see afterwards what my options are. I would like to get a job in the Netherlands, and I am positive that the Master’s degree from Tilburg University will help me to do that.
