Student Bob van Hees about the program

What is your educational background?

I started my higher education by studying Computer Science at the Avans University of Applied Sciences in Breda, The Netherlands. After completing this Bachelor’s degree, I was looking for a suitable Master’s program to broaden and deepen my knowledge about IT. This is how I ended up studying the MSc Information Management at TiSEM, after completing the mandatory pre-Master program, which lasted one semester.

What was the reason to choose the ITEM program?

The ITEM program offers me the opportunity to broaden my academic knowledge and gain international competences. That is, I had the chance to extend my academic knowledge in new areas such as human resource management and corporate social responsibility which were unknown to me prior to the program. However, the main reason for me to select the ITEM program was the chance to obtain international competences. The chance of studying and living abroad together with other international students really appealed to me.

What are your experiences with the program so far?

I personally really liked the international component of the ITEM program. During the semester in Finland I had the opportunity to meet many international and Finnish students. Consequently, apart from getting to know the Finnish culture, I also learned about many other cultures from my fellow students. Furthermore, the short trips organized by the student associations of Turku University gave me the opportunity to visit some of the surrounding countries of Finland (e.g. Sweden, the Baltics, Russia) but also to absorb some of the Finnish local culture.

What is special about the program?

The ITEM program offers a unique opportunity to extend the educational program of Tilburg University with an experience abroad. Thereby, the ITEM program offers a combination of broadening the academic knowledge and increasing the international competences. For example, there is the opportunity to broaden ones knowledge by taking courses in different fields. Furthermore the international experience grows while you meet other international students in Finland.

What was your favorite course and why?

My favorite course was Responsible Business – an introduction. During that course I learned a lot about corporate social responsibility. Originally coming from a technical background this course offered a new and welcome diversification of my knowledge. Furthermore, I appreciated the fact that this course was taught as an intensive course. This meant two full weeks of daily lectures and then directly an exam. This way of teaching really ensures that your time at the university is used efficiently.

What are your career aspirations?

After my graduation I plan to apply to one of the big five consultancy firms in the Netherlands.  At one of those firms I would like to fulfill a junior consultancy or an IT auditor function. In the long term, I would like to further grow as a professional into a senior consultant role.
