'If I can say that I was surprised with something regarding the Master (rather, I expected it all), that surprise could only be a positive one. In that connection, I would say that I was absolutely amazed with the high level expertise of our professors. Additionally, I would emphasize the practical approach they took towards teaching. Finally, I would definitely commend the professors’ encouragement to raise as many questions as possible and spark a real discussion and debate during classes'.

Alumni Nebojsa Jovanovic about the program:

Can you describe what your current position involves?

My daily work consists of: analyzing international and EU business transactions of our clients and writing legal opinions regarding VAT treatment thereon, making sure our clients’ business transactions are fully in line with VAT compliance requirements of a respective a country, making power-point presentations for client’s meetings, participating in technical meetings we have in Deloitte every two weeks, drawing up tax alerts, tax newsletters, agendas, etc.

Is this your first position after graduation? If not, what did you do before?

Yes, this is my first job after graduating from Tilburg University. However, previous to beginning my master’s studies at Tilburg University I had been a legal trainee for a year in a tax law firm in Belgrade.

How did you find this position?

I was recommended to Deloitte by one of the professors of Tilburg University who was at the same time one of my master’s thesis readers.

What was the defining moment in your study?

I would say there were two decisive moments. The first moment was when I passed the VAT exam and realized VAT is the tax field in which I want to further develop myself. The second most important moment was the thesis defense after which I was offered a possibility to start at Deloitte.

How do you use the knowledge gained at Tilburg University in your job?

Knowledge gained at Tilburg University makes my day-to-day working tasks much easier. It provided me with solid theoretical as well as practical basis for the challenges a VAT practitioner encounters in everyday business transactions of his/her clients.

Does your current job meet the expectations you had as a student?

Absolutely! I feel that I am ‘’growing’’ every day in terms of the knowledge gained and enhancement of my personal and professional skills. Deloitte is a magnificent environment to work in, not only from the perspective of people you encounter and work with, but also from the viewpoint of organization which is truly a high-level one. Next to this, Deloitte takes a lot of care of its employees and here nothing is left to chance.

In that connection, I would say that I was absolutely amazed with the high level expertise of our professors. Additionally, I would emphasize the practical approach they took towards teaching. Did you participate in extracurricular activities and if so, how did this contribute to your personal development?

Although I have been notably active as regards extracurricular student activities in the last 5 years of my life, I have to admit that during the master’s program due to the busy schedule (lectures, tutorials, etc.) I have not had that much time to get involved in some other activities at the University. Nonetheless, I do reckon that if I had more time I would definitely give it a try.

What is your ambition? What would you like to have achieved in 2020?

My ambition is to become a diverse tax practitioner and theoretician who works in the field of Value – Added Tax covering international and EU aspects of it. By 2020 I would like to have become a tax manager in one of the Big 4 companies, and, if possible, engaged in teaching in some way at the University.

Do you have any advice for current students?
