Master Program

The rapidly expanding leisure industries require a better understanding of the role of leisure organizations and of leisure consumers and the increasingly diverse leisure activities undertaken in the contemporary network society.

The focal point of the one-year Master’s program in Leisure Studies is the academic study of leisure from an integrated perspective. Leisure practices in the fields of sport, tourism, culture and media and the ways in which different actors (e.g. tourists, managers, policymakers, consumers, sports participants) interact in these fields is a central focus of the Master’s program. In leisure practices, aspects of demand (including the need for social cohesion and the shaping of identity) and supply (marketing, policy and organization) come together. Particular attention is paid to the transformation of leisure through trends such as internationalization, commercialization, individualization and digitalization, and how leisure organizations can deal with these changes. This broad approach to the dynamic field of leisure is based on a multidisciplinary perspective.

From 2013-2014 onwards, the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences will no longer offer a Master’s progam in Leisure Studies. 2012-2013 will be the final year that the Master’s program in Leisure Studies will be taught. Students who will start their Master’s program at the start of September 2012, will be offered the opportunity to finish their program. It is foreseen that the Academy for Leisure at the NHTV in Breda will offer the Master’s program in Leisure Studies from 2013-2014 onwards. For more information, please contact Adriaan van Liempt (NHTV).
