English for the Future Summer Course

  • Target group: The course is designed for students preparing to study in an English-taught environment (Bachelor’s or Master’s program) either in Tilburg or abroad.
  • Schedule: One 2-hour morning class and one 2-hour afternoon class. In between lessons you work on your homework and assignments. No lesson on Wednesday afternoons.

Course aims
The aim of the course is for students to improve their ability to communicate in written and spoken English for work and study either in the Netherlands or abroad.

Course information
The course English for the Future is built around grammar and vocabulary modules designed to help students revise and extend their proficiency in general English, and skills training. There are three written assignments (essay writing, letter writing and reviewing) and presentation training. There is also the opportunity for students to extend their knowledge of academic vocabulary and to improve their spoken fluency. English for the Future offers an extensive resource of practice activities covering a wide range of language, skills and usage tasks. These are done either in or out of class, in consultation with the teacher. With its wide range of subjects and activities, the course aims to be adaptive to the individual needs of students.

    Required reading
  • Reader developed by Tilburg University Language Center
  • English-English dictionary (e.g. Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary)

    Course specifics
  • Attendance: 80% attendance is required.
  • Target level: high B2 or C1
  • In the event of an insufficient number of participants, the Language Center reserves the right to cancel a course.

Registration
All participants should register with the Tilburg University Summer School. This includes Tilburg University students and staff. Assessment of proficiency with respect to entry requirements is the responsibility of the applicant. By registering for this course, you certify that you meet the set entry requirements for this course. Tilburg University students are advised to do the Student English Language Assessment (SELA) on Blackboard.

Costs
  • Tilburg University students 'pay' with 6 language vouchers. If you do not have enough vouchers, you pay €57 per language voucher.
  • Prospective Tilburg University students who register from September 2012 pay €426 and can use their language vouchers to get a refund of €342.
  • Tilburg University members of staff: pay €360.
  • External participants pay €426.
  • Alumni who graduated less than four years ago, can participate in this course at the internal rate of €360.

Accommodation
The course fee does not include accommodation and study materials. You have to arrange accommodation yourself. Tilburg University Summer School recommends you book a room with a housing company directly. If you wish to do so, you can indicate this during your registration.
