Course Information

During this three-week intensive course, you will be prepared for academic use of English (listening, reading, and most notably writing and speaking). Attention will be paid to grammatical accuracy and complexity. The writing part also deals with the construction of paragraphs, different text structures, proper referencing of sources, and argumentation. You have to write an individual paper (or research report) on a topic of your choice.

You will improve your speaking skills by means of discussions, debates and other assignments. You will also practice how to deliver an oral presentation including rhetorical devices, pronunciation, presentation techniques, and language practice.

Between the two lectures, time is reserved for independent study during which you are required to work on homework assignments and language areas in which you feel you need more practice. This is an intensive course for which you should reserve at least 40 hours per week.

Lessons are taught in the Language Center classrooms in interactive sessions. There will of course be some instruction by your teacher, but you will also discuss topics, do assignments or other activities in class, give and receive peer-to-peer feedback, have writing workshops, and so on. Each Wednesday, we have a special activity (compulsory).

Assessment of the course learning objectives are as follows:

  • Argumentative essay or research report (approx. 1500 words)
  • Academic oral presentation
  • Language exam (grammar, vocab, style)

Entry requirements:

This course is for students with a level of B2- or higher. During the first lesson, a placement test will be done to determine your starting level. Based on this test, you will be divided into 2 groups at different levels. Before signing up, please do the SELA (Blackboard test). If you do not have Blackboard because you are not a Tilburg University student, you can take one of the two tests at https://www.efset.org/.
