The week of March 11-15 is Student Wellbeing Awareness Week. This Awareness Week, organized by Amber van Dun (President of student party Fractie SAM) and Rosemarijn van den Goorbergh (Vice-President of TiGeAk), was introduced to make students aware of the importance of mental health in an easily accessible way.

Krijn Pansters: Theology and ethics essential in sustainability debate to better behavior
Historian and theologian Krijn Pansters, who is a staff member of the Franciscan Study Center at the Tilburg School of Catholic Theology, argues that the transition can only be sustainable if it originates from people’s own behavior. According to Pansters, there should be a more prominent role for ethics in the sustainability debate.

Ben Vollaard: ‘Environmental crime always leaves traces somewhere’
Environmental economist Ben Vollaard presented a Tilburg University Junior lecture for children on February 28 on the subject of ‘companies that are secretly polluting our environment’. It is a theme that appeals to children, but certainly to adults as well. Ben Vollaard operates like a true detective and has already uncovered several cases. His work is far from finished.

Blossoming love between different student association members: Divided loyalties?
Many loves have their origins on campus, though not all of them last. Some campus couples are still together to this day. Towards the university's 100th anniversary, we collect their love stories. Anne (40) studied Human Resource Studies at Tilburg University and joined student association Plato, Hein (38) opted for International Business and Olof. Not an obvious match perhaps, but perhaps it was all written in the stars?

Iranian alumna Negin Mirzaghavam successfully completed her Master's degree in Data Science and Society at Tilburg University in August 2023 on a scholarship granted by the Tilburg University Fund. "Without the scholarship, I would not have had the opportunity to pursue this degree program. It is thanks to other people’s generosity that I am standing here now."

The warehousification of the Dutch landscape: Tentative solutions
Everyone has an opinion on the big box distribution centers that have sprung up in many places in the Netherlands. But how many are there, how much space do they actually take up, and how does this relate to economic benefit and sustainability? Angela Acocella has conducted research, together with Frans Cruijssen and Jan Fransoo, into the arguments based on data relating to, among other things, inventory levels, markets served, and locations. The researchers make four recommendations.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science: "This is the moment to pave the way for women in science"
The 11th of February is International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a day established by the United Nations in 2015 to promote gender equality in science and highlight the important role of women and girls in science. After nine years, the continued necessity of this day is evident from the statistics provided by the 2023 Female Professors Monitor (Monitor Vrouwelijke Hoogleraren 2023). The growth in the number of female professors is plateauing.

The use of green hydrogen and the chicken-and-egg problem: how the law can solve it
How do we move away from the use of fossil fuels towards climate neutrality? Sustainable hydrogen has great potential but is not widely available yet, nor are we ready to use it. Law scholar Max Baumgart of the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology and society (TILT) is investigating how to stimulate markets for sustainable hydrogen as well as innovation by means of rules and regulations.

The brand-new Marga Klompé building: Creativeness, sustainability, and an eye for the environment
On January 29, 2024, we will proudly inaugurate the Marga Klompé building. The lecture halls and study places offer space for approximately 1,000 students. The largest of the fourteen lecture halls seats 450. We are looking forward eagerly to the inspiration and creativeness which this brand-new building will offer students and staff.

Impact Award 2023 for “the pillar and the post” of legal tax aid
The Child-Care Allowance affair is still fresh in memory, but Professor of Legal Protection Diana van Hout had long before trained her sights on an underlying, more fundamental problem. In 2018, she took the first step towards filling a gap in legal protection: legal tax aid for people who cannot afford it. And in 2022, SOFiR, the Stichting Ondersteuning Fiscale Rechtshulp (the Legal Tax Aid Support Foundation), was born. It won van Hout the Tilburg University Impact Award 2023.
