Admission and Application Christianity and Society

Follow the application procedure below if:

  • you have a (1) Dutch nationality AND
  • want to apply on the basis of a (2) diploma awarded by an institution inside the Netherlands.

Please note

Applicants with a non-Dutch nationality and/or a non-Dutch diploma will need to follow the international procedure.


a) Check your eligibility

Admission requirements

Before applying, please make sure that you meet the following requirements:

  • A Dutch academic Bachelor's degree.
    If you have a Bachelor's degree from a Dutch hbo or other non-university institution of higher education, you must first complete our Pre-Master's program.
  • An interest in Christianity and in the workings of religion and society.
  • A basic knowledge of Christianity and theology (a reading list is available to improve your knowledge prior to the start of the program).
  • Advanced knowledge of English; at least a havo or vwo level of English.

b) Consider the deadlines

When applying for this program, please make sure that your application package, including all necessary documents, reaches us before the deadline for application.

Master's program in Christianity and Society

Start date program: End of August

Deadlines for application

  • Non-EU applicants: 1 April
  • EU applicants: 1 July

Pre-Master's program in Christianity and Society

Start date program: End of January

Deadlines for application

  • Non-EU applicants: 15 October
  • EU applicants: 1 December

c) Follow the application procedure

If you have a:

  1. Bachelor in Theology or a Pre-Master in Christianity and Society from Tilburg School of Catholic Theology
  2. AND are already registered as a student at Tilburg University,

then you don't have to submit an application for admission and can directly re-enroll for a Master's program. In June you will receive an email at your Tilburg University email address about re-enrollment.

All other applicants should follow the procedure described below:

Step 1: Prepare your application package

Required documents:

  1. Certified copies of your diploma(s) and grade list(s). These copies must have the official and original stamps of either the school or the Dutch Embassy (the stamps cannot be copies themselves).
    If you have not obtained your diploma yet, please enclose a certified copy of your most recent grade list(s).
  2. A motivation letter stating why you would like to join this Master’s program.
  3. Your curriculum vitae (maximum of two typed pages).
  4. Photocopy/scan of your passport (valid at least until September 1 of the year in which you would like to begin your studies), stating your full names, date of birth and place of birth, in English or in Latin script.

Step 2: Request for admission

You need permission from the Admissions Committee of Tilburg School of Catholic Theology (TST) to register for this Master’s Program. Please fill out the admission form and send it together with all the requested documents (see step 1) to the address mentioned on the form.

Within six weeks (often within two weeks) you will receive an email from the Admissions Committee stating the outcome of your admission request.

There are three possibilities:

  • A. (Conditionally) accepted to the Master's program
    If you are conditionally accepted, this means that you are admitted to our Master's program, provided that you send the originals or certified copies of your documents. If you are accepted to the Master’s Program, you will also receive a Proof of Admittance from the Admissions Committee. This letter contains the conditions of admittance and your Master’s Program.
  • B. Accepted to a Pre-Master's program
    It is possible that you do not completely fulfill the requirements. If this is the case, we may offer you a Pre-Master's program to prepare you for the Master's program. Conditionally accepted means that you are admitted to the Pre-Master's program, provided that you send the originals or certified copies of your documents.
  • C. Rejected
    If you do not fulfill the admission requirements, your application will be rejected. We will e-mail you personally the reasons for the rejection.

Step 3: Enroll via Studielink

All applicants accepted for this program are required to register via Studielink, the Dutch national database for higher education.

  • You need to register before the official start of the program, but we strongly advise you to register in Studielink as soon as possible after your admission.
  • You will not receive information about other procedures after your admission until you have registered in Studielink.
  • In Studielink:
    • The Master's program in Christianity and Society is listed as:
      M Theology and Religious Studies
      (in Dutch: M Theologie en Religiewetenschappen)
      .
    • The Pre-Master's program in Christianity and Society is listed among the Bachelor's programs as:
      B Theology (premaster Christianity and Society)
      or in Dutch: B Theologie (premaster Christianity and Society).
  • Make sure that you use the same email address in Studielink as the email address you registered with in Tilburg University's online application system.

Step 4: Confirm your enrollment

After your registration in Studielink, you will be notified by Tilburg University and need to confirm this registration before you can start with the program.
