"With the skills I obtain during this Master's track, I hope to be a valuable asset to a company where I can develop myself further in the field of Data Science. I think that there is a growing need in organizations for people with the skills to work with big data and create meaning out of large datasets. Therefore, I have a rather positive look on my career prospects."

What Bachelor's program did you finish before starting this Master's track?

I did the Bachelor Communication and Information Sciences at Tilburg University.

Why did you choose to study Data Science: Business and Governance at Tilburg University?

When I graduated from my Bachelor, I had a tough time deciding whether to apply for the Human Aspects of Information Technology track (now Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence) or the Data Science: Business and Governance track. I knew I wanted to stay in Tilburg because I have had a great experience with the university so far, and loved my time in Tilburg. I finally chose Data Science: Business and Governance, and I’m so glad I did! The program focuses on the fundamentals of Data Science and provides a concrete set of programming skills that enables you to work with large data sets. The courses seemed to be challenging and very useful in a future career, which made me choose for this Master's program.

What are your aspirations for the future?

With the skills I obtain during this Master's track, I hope to be a valuable asset to a company where I can develop myself further in the field of Data Science. I think that there is a growing need in organizations for people with the skills to work with big data and create meaning out of large datasets. Therefore, I have a rather positive look on my career prospects.

Do you have any tips for new students?

The foundation of Data Science is taught in the course Social Data Mining, which is a great introductory course in the world of Data Science. Furthermore, you will learn to program with Python and R, and apply these skills in other courses such as Text Mining and even your thesis! A tip for new students: don’t wait too long with practicing the programming courses. It takes time to get familiar with these languages, but once you do, you can add a very valuable skill to your CV. For the thesis project, you can choose to write your thesis at the university or choose to gain experience with an external partner. This is introduced to you gradually throughout the year with the Data Science in Action course.
