"The knowledge gained at Tilburg University I apply on a daily basis. Especially the analytical tools and techniques I studied. In business life there is less interest in in-depth theoretical insights, but I constantly analyze data as I learned at the university.”

Alumna Pinar Aygun about her experiences:

Can you describe what your current position involves?

As a business analyst I analyze consumer data GFK has collected to provide insight on what's happening in the Dutch consumer goods market. Topics are for example brand loyalty, number of brands and products purchased, success of product innovations. I'm working a lot with statistics programs like SAS.

How did you get in touch with this company?

The company has strong ties with several faculty members at Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM) yet I had not heard of AiMark until I was looking for marketing research firms on the internet. The company appealed to me so I submitted an open application. During the interview I felt an immediate, mutual connection and although there were no open positions at the time, I was hired anyway.

What was the defining moment in your study?

I had applied for and was accepted in Marketing Management and in Marketing Research (now Marketing Analytics). Realizing that Marketing Management is qualitative, not about numbers and proof and thus knowing Marketing Research fits me better - that was important. During my Marketing Research education, I have learned many different data analysis techniques. Among them, conjoint analysis attracted me the most as it provides strong insight in what's ahead and that's very exciting.

Does your current job meet the expectations you had as a student?

It certainly does. I'm practicing what I studied for and am learning even more while doing it.

What has surprised you about you master program?

The Marketing Research program is fairly small. I was in a class of about 20 students, including some international students, allowing for a lot of interaction, which I liked. I was also impressed with the extensive theoretical background of the professors.

Did you participate in extracurricular activities and if so, how did this contribute to your personal development?

I did not actively participate in the study association (Asset), since it seemed to focus more on the Dutch students. I did take advantage of the activities organized by the international students association and enjoyed meeting students from different cultures and visiting various cities in the Netherlands. I also worked as an intern at TomTom, an internationally oriented company. That experience was very valuable. Since the company is located in Amsterdam I also learned about the cultural differences between the northern and the southern part of the Netherlands.

What is your ambition? What would like to have achieved in 2020?

First of all I want to live and work in different countries and get to know different kinds of people. Eventually I hope to find a more permanent position, which stills offers challenges and opportunities for personal growth. And maybe have a family too….

What or who gives you inspiration and why?

That's a tough question. I've never really looked up to one individual. My motivation comes from within: I always want to be better than I was in the past. I guess inspiration comes from life itself.

Do you have any advice for current students?

Plan ahead! It takes time to arrange for an internship, write a thesis, get a visa - don't wait until it's too late.
