Dossier Big Data

Tilburg University MSc students @ Eurosonic Noorderslag: There is data in music

On January 15th, MSc in Marketing Management and Marketing Research students Daniƫlle Liplijn, Tim Emmers, and Ton Verhoeven will present the results of their Research in Social Media data challenge at Eurosonic Noorderslag.

Eurosonic Noorderslag is the key exchange and networking platform for European music. Selling out each year, Eurosonic Noorderslag attracts over 3,900 delegates, including 400 international festivals.

As a part of the Research in Social Media course, students got access to a large data set of Buma/Stemra that contained information about every music event in the Netherlands over the past 10 years. Their challenge: Provide meaningful marketing insights based on these data from the musical industry.

Some of these best cases will now be presented at Eurosonic. Hannes Datta (Dept. Marketing), course coordinator of the Research in Social Media course, will moderate the presentations and discussions, and will also present the findings of an academic study related to the use of big data in the musical industry (research by Hannes Datta, George Knox and Bart Bronnenberg).
