Expertise

Antropologie van de religie. Speciale aandachtsvelden hierbinnen zijn de religies van Afrika, in het bijzonder de traditionele Afrikaanse orale religies in hun interactie met moderniserings en globaliseringsprocessen. en de veranderende inbedding van deze religies in de lokale maatschappijen. Deze analyses stoelen op eigen veldwerk, intensief en longitudinaal, vooral in Noord-Kameroen (onder de Kapsiki/Higi) en Mali (Dogon). In beide gebieden heb ik vanaf resp. 1972 en 1979 onderzoek verricht dat nog steeds lopende is, door middel van regelmatige herbezoeken.

Theoretisch gaat het daarin om de ontwikkeling van ritueel theorie, waarin wordt ingespeeld op nieuwe theorievorming binnen de antropologie, met name de 'modulaire theorie'. Hierin staat ritueel centraal als grondbeginsel van religieus handelen en denken. In dit verband houd ik mij ook bezig met beschrijving en analyse van één schrifthebbende religie, nl. het Mormonisme, een sterk contrast met de twee Afrikaanse religies.
