ExpertiseKees Bastmeijer is hoogleraar natuurbeschermings- en waterrecht aan de Universiteit van Tilburg. Hij is actief in zowel het onderwijs als het onderzoek. Wat betreft het onderwijs verzorgt hij milieurechtelijke vakken aan zijn eigen universiteit, maar ook regelmatig aan buitenlandse universiteiten (Akureyri/IJsland, Ottawa/Canada). In zijn onderzoek heeft Kees met name aandacht voor de rol die het recht kan spelen bij een goede bescherming van grote internationale wildernisgebieden (bijv. de poolstreken), de bescherming van de Europese natuur, maar zeker ook de bescherming van natuurwaarden in Nederland. Daarbij is hij steeds meer geïnteresseerd geraakt in de verbindingen tussen het recht en kennis uit andere disciplines, zoals ecologie, filosofie en antropologie. Kennis uit deze andere disciplines acht hij van groot nut om het functioneren, maar helaas vaak het niet-functioneren van natuurbeschermingsrecht beter te begrijpen en om nieuwe ideeën op te doen over vernieuwing in het recht. Naast het verzorgen van internationale wetenschappelijke publicaties, is Kees regelmatig als adviseur betrokken bij projecten binnen Nederland. Daarbij wordt in toenemende mate aandacht besteed aan de relaties tussen het natuur- en waterbeleid. Binnen Brabant richt zijn adviserende werk zich met name op het werkterrein van de organisaties die een deel van zijn leerstoel sponsoren (Prov. Noord-Brabant, de Brabantse Waterschapsbond, Staatsbosbeheer, Natuurmonumenten en Stichting het Brabants Landschap).
