Opleiding
Linda van de Kamp studied cultural anthropology at VU University, Amsterdam where she received her Ph.D. in 2011 with the distinction Cum Laude. She wrote a Ph.D. thesis entitled Violent Conversion: Brazilian Pentecostalism and the Urban Pioneering of Women in Mozambique. Based on two years of fieldwork in Maputo, Mozambique, in this thesis she concludes that Pentecostal conversion is not best understood in terms of a coping mechanism but often implies increasing uncertainty and downward mobility. Linda grew up in Brazil, returned to Brazil during her master studies, and conducted two years of fieldwork in Mozambique. As a result, she speaks fluent Portuguese (besides English and Dutch).
CarrièreFrom 2010-2011 Linda van de Kamp worked at the African Studies Centre, Leiden. Since March 2012 she is a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Culture Studies, School of Humanities, Tilburg University, the Netherlands. She studies the increasing circulation of (Afro-) Brazilian religious rituals between Europe, Africa and Brazil. Her main research foci are the rise and popularity of global Pentecostalism; transnational connections; urban studies; violence; family, gender and sexuality. Over the last 10 years, Linda van de Kamp has presented at different international conferences, has given guest lectures and has built up considerable teaching experience with teaching bachelor courses on 'Anthropology of Religion', 'Globalization and Religion', and 'Political Structures in Post-Colonial Africa' at VU University, Amsterdam; Leiden University and at the University of Amsterdam. Furthermore, she has been a guest lecturer in Mozambique at Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo and the Theological Seminary of Ricatla. Linda has also been on radio shows and newspaper stories have covered her work.
