Swerts is gespecialiseerd in onderzoek naar functies van nonverbale communicatie. Resultaten van zijn onderzoek moeten inzicht verschaffen in de manier waarop mensen met elkaar communiceren in gesproken taal, en zijn relevant voor de verbetering van gesproken dialoogsystemen.

Projecten

Mijn onderzoek richt zich op de functionele analyse van nonverbale commicatie. Daarbij vraag ik me af in hoeverre bepaalde communicatieve functies in gesproken interacties met mensen en machines kunnen worden ondersteund door verschillende vormen van lichaamstaal (bv. gelaatsuitdrukkingen, hand- en armgebaren) en verbale cues (bv. intonatie, tempo, ritme, luidheid, stemkwaliteit).
