Most of my research focuses on the determinants, experience, and intra- and interindividual consequences of secret keeping. Why do we have secrets: what personality and social pressures determine one's tendency to keep secrets? How is secret keeping related to objective (such as immune parameters in HIV positive patients) and subjective measures (such as quality of life, life satisfaction, etc.) of well-being? What is the rol of secrets in clinical practice? I try to answer these questions using an evolutionary psychological framework, in particular social pain theory.
