The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), better known as Shanghai Rankings, focuses on the number of highly cited publications, Nobel prizes, and the number of articles published in the influential academic journals of Nature and Science. This general World Top 500 is published annually by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Their Shanghai Subject rankings are based on the number of scientific articles in the subject area, the impact of the publications, international collaboration, the number of publications in top journals in the subject field (journals listed by the Shanghai Ranking), and the number of staff wining a significant award in the subject field.
