Abstract:
Population aging has raised concerns about the sustainability of the welfare state. This thesis consists of five empirical studies on aging and retirement. The first study investigates the growth of the female labor force participation, which raises tax revenues and therefore alleviates the structural deficit caused by population aging. The second study combines labor market and mortality data to compare the health condition of early retired and unemployed elderly to those who are still employed. The third study examines the decision making process of adult children to provide informal care to their elderly parents and pays special attention to the cooperativeness of the interactions between siblings. The past and future income distribution of the Dutch elderly is the theme of the fourth study. The fifth study quantifies the association between income and remaining life expectancy after the statutory retirement age of 65 in the Netherlands.
