Abstract:
This thesis considers various decision problems in politics: the decision whether to stand for
election, the choice of platform, the voting decision and the formation of coalitions. These
problems are approached from an economic and game theoretical point of view. Part I of the
thesis deals with electoral competition in a non-cooperative framework. As a novel feature,
active voting rights are explicitly considered. Part II deals with the stability of coalitions and
proposes a new solution concept for coalitional games that is underpinned by a non-cooperative bargaining process. The concept is applied to a model in which political and
economic decisions are interrelated.
