Martin Smits

Martin Smits is Associate Professor of Information Systems and Management at the School of Economics and Management. He is member of Center for Research on Economics and Business (CentER), Center for Research on Law and Economics (TILEC), Center for Research on the Transformation of Health Care (TRANZO), and the European Research Institute for Services Science (ERISS).

His research focuses on the impact of IT on the performance of organizations and business networks, with research topics such as Strategic Information Systems Planning (SISP), Business-IT alignment, Management of IT, Inter-Organizational Information Systems (IOIS), IT-enabled business networks, Business Process Management (BPM), Supply Chain Integration, and Knowledge Management. His main research domains are e-health, e-government, and IT in the financial services industry.

Some of his projects are:

  • Assessing the effectiveness of strategic alignment in organizations (the iFit project). We developed a quick scan tool and applied it in 10 large organizations to analyze the relations between IT-governance, alignment, data quality, and business performance.
  • Improving manpower planning in health care to match long-term care needs and care supply on national and regional levels. this project includes system dynamics modeling of care systems and designing participative policy and decision making by institutional stakeholders (insurance companies, university hospitals, specialist care providers).
  • Information management in health care networks (with TRANZO). In 2008, the focus was on Business Process Analysis and Business Process Redesign in mental health care organizations, assessing the impact of process redesign (by implementing stepped care and brief therapy) on health care performance. Performance indicators include waiting times and waiting lists. Since 2009, the focus is on standardization of care processes, lean thinking, and design of care pathways.
  • Network Enterprises of the Future enabled by Telematics Infrastructure (NEFETI), on structure and performance of IT enabled business networks ( a Telematics Institute research grant).
  • Telematics Innovation and Control in Next Generation Supply Chains (TICS) on supply chain management and supply chain integration in business networks. (Telematics Institute research grant).
  • Measuring Knowledge Management Effectiveness (METIS), a Telematics Institute research program.
  • Enterprise Content Management in Large Multinational Organizations (Philips research grant).
  • Growth Nodes in a Knowledge Based Economy (on the role of IT infrastructure in knowledge transfer and regional development), an EU (IST-FP6 research grant).
  • Effects of groupware, GDSS and electronic meeting systems in organizations (several research grants).
  • Wired International Teams: on the design of multicultural virtual teams in networked organizations (WIT-fund research grant).

He teaches at several universities on bachelor, master, phd, and executive master levels on topics including 'Information Management', 'Accounting and Control', 'Strategic Management of Educational Organizations', and 'MBA Health'.
