Eric van Damme - Brief CV
Eric van Damme (born 1956) is professor of economics at the CentER for Economic Research, Tilburg University, The Netherlands and co-Director of TILEC (Tilburg Law and Economics Center). He studied mathematics at the
Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen, and received his Ph.D. (Technical Sciences) from the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. His Ph.D. Thesis "Refinements of the
Nash Equilibrium Concept" was supervised by Prof. Jaap Wessels and Prof. Reinhard Selten. His research interests involve game theory, economic theory, competition
policy and regulation, experimental economics, bounded rationality and bargaining. He has extensive teaching experience in these fields as well. Before coming to Tilburg,
Eric van Damme had been affiliated with the Technical University of Delft (The Netherlands), the JL Kellog School of Management at Northwestern University (Evanston, USA)
and the economics department of the University of Bonn (Germany). He has held visiting and teaching appointments in Bielefeld, Copenhagen, Vienna, Stockholm, Lisbon,
Helsinki. He has written numerous books, and articles on a range of topics involving game theory. Eric van Damme is a fellow of the Econometric Society. He has been member of the Council of the European Economic Association. From 1999 till 2008 Eric held the position of secretary and treasurer of the Game Theory Society. Furthermore, he is a member of the editorial board of Jaarboek van de Koninklijke Vereniging voor de Staatshuishoudkunde, Markt en Mededinging, CPB-Reports, Economic Bulletin and Game Theory, Mathematical Programming and Operations Research.
Eric van Damme has extensively consulted to firms and the government in his area of expertise, and acted as an advisor for one of the winning consortia during the Dutch DCS-1800 auction. He advised the Dutch government on competition issues and is a member of several government committees, among others the Commissie Mededinging en Ordening of the SER, and the Adviescommissie Bezwaarschriften Mededingingswet of the NMa (Dutch competition authority).
From April 1999 until September 2005, Eric van Damme has written a bi-weekly column in a leading Dutch newspaper ("Algemeen Dagblad") in which he tried to popularize economic science. At present he writes a column in ESB (Economische Statistische Berichten).
