International Conference on the CIED patient perspective

Living in a Device World: Focus on Recent Challenges and Tools to Improve Clinical Care for Patients with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator.

The number of patients with heart disease living with a cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED), such as an implantable cardioverter defibrillator or a biventricular pacemaker providing cardiac resynchronization therapy, has increased substantially in the past decade, and is projected to increase also in the future due to expanding indications. At present, nearly one million patients in North America and more than 800,000 patients in Europe have a CIED. Although the medical benefits of device therapy are well established, it is associated with complications and psychological distress in individual patients.

The primary focus of this two-day conference is on the patient perspective. Hence, the impact of living with a CIED on the patient, and recent challenges, innovations and tools to improve clinical care, will be discussed. The conference is of interest to physicians, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, technicians and other health-care professionals active in the device field and clinical settings.

The emphasis will be on building bridges between disciplines, research and clinical practice. The program will include plenary sessions featuring prominent international experts in the field.

The conference will close with the PhD defence of Henneke Versteeg: Cardiovascular implantable electronic devices: The patient perspective.
