CommAI: Evaluating the first steps towards a useful general AI

(Joint work with: Tomas Mikolov, Armand Joulin, Allan Jabri, Germán Kruszewski, Klemen Simonic, and Angeliki Lazaridou)

With machine learning algorithms becoming more powerful every day, there is renewed interest in the development of general-purpose AI. This is however a vaguely defined goal, which makes evaluating progress towards it very difficult. We propose the following set of desiderata for general AI, based on the pragmatic principle that we would want it to be useful to humans:

  • an intelligent machine should be able to learn, fast, to accomplish any new task it is asked to perform;
  • we should be able to communicate with, and instruct the machine in natural language;
  • after an initial learning phase, the machine should be able to learn about new tasks without supervision or explicit reward;
  • the machine interface should be maximally general.

We have recently open-sourced a simulated environment that facilitates the evaluation of machines in terms of these desiderata. In my talk, I will motivate our enterprise, describe our environment, and discuss the many open issues of our initiative.
