What: The Index of Cognitive Activity as a measure of cognitive load in language comprehension
Where: WZ 103
When: Wednesday, 31 August 2016, 12:30 - 13:30 hours

The Index of Cognitive Activity (ICA) measures the frequency of rapid increases in pupil size, which are taken as an indicator of the amount of cognitive load. Previous work has applied the ICA as a measure of cognitive load in coordinating language comprehension and driving in a dual task setting. As expected, the ICA increased with increased complexity/information density in the linguistic input, as well as when driving was more difficult. However, contrary to expectation, the ICA was generally lower in the dual task than in single-task driving.

In this talk, I will present a study in which we further explored the cognitive underpinnings of the ICA. Using previously untested dual-task combinations, we replicated the decrease in the ICA in dual as compared to single tasks. In addition, we found that the ICA varied substantially with individual differences in both task performance and working memory capacity. I will discuss a possible explanation of these findings based on an existing neurological model of mental workload.
