TILT lecture on the Patentability of Stem Cell Innovation
The Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT) is delighted to announce that Prof. Roger Brownsword will give the upcoming TILT lecture entitled 'Regulatory Coherence, Regulatory Legitimacy, and the Patentability of Stem Cell Innovation' on Friday 11 May 2012 from 10:00 - 11:00 hrs in M 10.03. TILT invites everyone who is interested - whether a member of our faculty or not - to attend the lecture.

In his lecture, prof. Brownsword will reflect on the regulatory ramifications of the recent decision by the European Court of Justice in the Brüstle case. The court decided that an invention is not patentable where the working of that invention requires the prior destruction of human embryos or their use as base material. It is expected that this decision will have adverse effects on scientific research involving human embryonic stem cells in Europe.

Roger Brownsword is a professor at King’s College London. In recent years, he has acted as a specialist adviser to the House of Lords Select Committee on Stems Cells and the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee; he was a member of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics from 2004-2010; he was a Leverhulme Research Fellow in 2003-2004; he has served as co-editor of the Articles section of the Modern Law Review and he is now a member of the Editorial Board; he was a member of the Law panel for the Research Assessment Exercise in 2008; he is the founding co-editor of a new journal; Law, Innovation and Technology, which launched in 2009; and he currently chairs the Ethics and Governance Council of UK Biobank. Roger Brownsword was a visiting scholar of TILT in 2008.
