Title: Seeing race: Implicit bias in visual perception
Location: AZ 209

Visual perception is assumed to be accurate - people usually believe what they see. However, I will present neural and behavioral data suggesting that social goals can modulate the earliest stages of face detection and the representation of facial features.

These effects appear to be implicit and, though subtle, they can elicit discriminatory social impressions, attitudes, and behaviors that favor ingroup members over outgroup members. This research highlights an important interface between motivation and perception that has implications for prejudice, social cognition, and self-regulation.
