Bio

My research explores constructions and perceptions of body projects and ideals in contemporary societies with a particular focus on the cosmetic procedures industry.  In 2021, Routledge published my book Discourses of Perfection, in which I analyse the marketing of cosmetic procedures in the UK and (gendered) perceptions of the cosmetics industry. Currently, I focus on patient experiences of complications after cosmetic procedures and adolescents' perceptions of body ideals and cosmetic procedures. Also, I am the academic lead for the Filtering Reality project, which employs a co-creation approach to the development of a media literacy program related to body image for children.

In 2020, I co-established the interdisciplinary Expertisegroep Cosmetische Ingrepen, which I chair. This group comprises medical, consumer, and academic experts and aims to achieve better insights into the cosmetic surgery industry in The Netherlands through both qualitative and quantitative research.
