Expositions in the Zwijsen Building
Since the establishment of the Zwijsen Building, a number of artworks are regularly exhibited in the building. These exhibitions can consist of both existing and new work.
Permanent artwork
The following works of art are permanently in possession of Tilburg University and are, besides a variety of temporary exhibitions, regularly exhibited in the Zwijsen Building.
Patrijzen (+ de Dood) / (Partridges (+ Death), , Marc Mulders
Artist: Marc Mulders; figurative art, still life; dimensions 114 x 113; Tilburg, 2006
Marc Mulders (Tilburg, 1958) is one of the most prominent contemporary Dutch painters. His work is included in collections both nationally and abroad. Marc Mulders’s oeuvre is determined by perhaps the largest theme in art history: the eternal cycle of life and death.

Hij/zij vertelt / He/she talks, Lieke Ijzermans
Artist: Lieke IJzermans; painting, oil paint; dimensions 170 x 205; Tilburg, 1999
In the past, Lieke IJzermans mainly focused on painting scenes with a biblical theme, but in her painting ‘Hij/zij vertelt’ she portrayed faces from her environment to indicate God’s presence. IJzermans chose to portray people who are close to her and have been of special importance in determining her image of God.

Een eerste teken van leven / A first sign of life, Hans van den Bemt
Artist: Hans van den Bemt; gouache and ink on paper; dimensions 90 x 63; 1999
With a series of artworks named ‘a first sign of life’, Hans van den Bemt has displayed several reflections on archetypes of religious imaging. The series consist of seven works of gouache and ink on paper that reflect fundamental Christian themes such as ‘Genesis’, ‘death’ and ‘resurrection’.

Cor humanum , Jes van der Bijl
Artist: Jes van der Bijl; egg tempera on panel; dimensions 40 x 35, Haaren, 2000
Among others, Jes van der Bijl works with egg tempera: a natural paint, which is also applied when painting icons. In her artwork, Jes expresses her belief that God is manifested in all living things and creatures, even in the human heart (‘cor humanum’).

Visie op God / Vision on God, Erwin de Hart
Artist: Erwin de Hart; painting, oil paint; dimensions 45 x 45; Etten-Leur, 2001
With his artwork ‘Vision on God’, Erwin de Hartwants to say that it is not God who created man, but it is man who created God. By having faith in God, mankind wanted to structure life and explain inexplainable matters. Visual depictions of this structuring and these explanations exist as art. In his painting, Erwin de Hart depicts scenes from everyday life, which are at the same time veiled by the unknown.

Dubbelstoel / Doublechair, Jeroen Doorenweerd
Artist: Jeroen Doorenweerd; French oak wood; dimensions 200 x 180 x 100; Etten-Leur, 1995
On a regular basis, Jeroen Doorenweerd develops art objects that contribute to interior design. In 1995, Tilburg University bought one of Doorenweerd’s art objects that also serves as a functional instrument during conversations and discussion programs in the Zwijsen Building. Because the interlocutors are in the so-called ‘double chair’ in a more or less enclosed space, they are given inner calm and concentration during a conversation.

Zitje / Seat, Beatrice Geboers
Artist: Beatrice Geboers; wood and metal
For the renovation of the Zwijsen Building in 1996, Beatrice Geboers (1962, Balen, Belgium) designed an artistic but functional seat for the foyer of the building. The seat is formed by four white, wooden bucket seats, and several round tables are placed near the seats.
