Italian

It is well known that Italian is an important cultural language. In literature, painting, music, architecture: Italian culture plays a prominent role in many arenas. Great names such as Dante, Monteverdi, Michelangelo and Da Vinci have had a huge stamp on the cultural development of Western civilization.

Contemporary Italian culture continues to blossom. Authors such as Umberto Eco and Alessandro Baricco and cineasts such as Luchino Visconti and Federico Fellini have made Italian literature and film into household names. Many other architects, musicians, designers and artists are an inextricable part of our cultural landscape. Command of Italian provides you the opportunity to enjoy all these great works in their original language.

The Language Center offers the course ‘Italian for Beginners’.

Italian for Beginners

13x 3-hour classes, 8 hours self-study per week, 6 ECTS

You will work on your vocabulary and knowledge of grammar through group and individual assignments. An example of an exercise is using a number of pictures to discuss a certain topic and you will learn to make sentences with fixed combinations of words.

Italian culture is also part of the course. Intercultural differences between the Netherlands and Italy are discussed as well as the question ‘What is typically Italian?’

After completing the course, you will be able to introduce yourself in Italian, hold a short conversation, and be able to understand and write short texts. You will have reached level A1.2/A2.1 of the Common European Reference Framework.
