Why study at Humboldt University?

The Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is Berlin's oldest university, founded in 1810 as the Universität zu Berlin by the liberal Prussian educational reformer and linguist Wilhelm von Humboldt, whose university model has strongly influenced other European and Western universities. Today, the university is a very large university with approximately 27.756 students.

The Humboldt University exists of 11 faculties: Faculty of Law; Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture; 2 Faculties of Mathematics and Natural Sciences; Berlin University Medicine; 4 Faculties of Philosophy; Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration.

“Berlin is really nice and everything can be reached within a reasonable amount of time. The university is located near Friederichstrasse and the economic faculty near Hackescher Markt. Both are in the middle of the 'touristic' city center.”

Practical information

Academic calendar

The academic calendar at Humboldt Universität is very different from our calendar:

  • Fall semester: October - March
  • Spring semester: April - September

If you are a Bachelor student who has the opportunity to go on exchange without having a study delay then this is not a good option for you as you will miss quite a lot of your second semester. It is advisable for Bachelor students to go on exchange in Spring semester and not in Fall semester, in order not to miss the first few weeks of the second semester.

For Master students wanting to go in the second semester before writing the thesis this is an ideal option as you most probably can finish all Master courses before going on exchange!

Cost of living

Cost of living is approx. € 550 / € 900 per month based on:

  • Accommodation: € 350 / € 550
  • Food: € 160
  • Transport: € 75 / € 100

The semester ticket is a student season ticket for public transport in Berlin. Every student is required to purchase the ticket each semester, which gives freedom of travel for the whole semester, i.e. for six months, on the underground (subway), on the S-Bahn, on buses, trams and ferry boats throughout Berlin and in Potsdam (fare zones ABC). A bicycle may also be taken along for free. It is a very reasonable price. After all, a standard monthly season ticket costs € 72 and is valid only on public transport within Berlin (fare zones AB).

Erasmus grant available

In addition, a new scholarship is available for students going on exchange to Germany, the DIA Stipendium (information only available in Dutch). The scholarship is offered by the German Institute in Amsterdam, who want to promote studying in Germany. You will need to apply for this scholarship yourself.

Language courses

Humbold offers various intensive language courses to international students either before the semester or during the semester.

In Berlin student halls of residence or dormitories are run mainly by the Studentenwerk (the student welfare organization) rather than by the university. Halls of residence (Wohnheime) are located in various parts of the city and vary in standard and price from € 130 to € 270 per month.

The university also offers students some guidance when they want to search for an apartment/room in Berlin themselves.
