Study delay
Reporting study delay
Despite all your good intentions and exertions, you might fall behind your work (e.g. through illness, or because you are feeling out of sorts and don't know what the cause is). That is why it is important to raise the alarm over this and report every (future) study delay.
Together with a dean of Students it can be discussed how to limit this delay as much as possible and how to catch up with it.
If the study delay is caused by circumstances beyond your control, you might even receive financial support from Tilburg University under certain conditions.
One of the conditions is that you receive a Dutch government grant ("basisbeurs") and the study delay takes place within the first four years. Foreign students without a Dutch grant cannot be financially supported in case of delay!!!
It is of paramount importance that you immediately report (within two months) the specific circumstances which have caused or might cause your delay to the Dean of Students.
First year students in particular, who will get a binding study advice (bsa) need to report circumstances within two months. If these circumstances appear to be crucial for your study progress, and you might not gain 42 ects, the Dean of Students can recommend the exam committee to postpone your bsa. This goes only for students who have reported circumstances that caused the delay.
For students with a Dutch grant ("studiefinanciering") it is also important to report (possible) delay within two months. If they exceed the maximum term of four years grant, they might get financial compensation.
Foreign students without a Dutch grant may get financial support for study delay in some limited cases. Please read the regulations in the Profilefund for more information.
If something temporarily prevents you from studying, you need to report this to the Dean of Students, even if you think "I'll catch up with this". It's better to raise false alarm over something that initially didn't appear to be a major problem than having to find out that this innocent illness or insignificant conflict with your parents had a larger impact on your study results after all.
Very often it is too late to be eligible for a certain settlement and you have to pay back your scholarship for instance, because you didn't come up to the standard. Or the problem has become so big in the mean time, that it has become nearly impossible to solve it.
Of course, you can always contact your academic advisor to discuss your study progress and study plan in case of (possible) delay.
In brief, let a small impediment not turn into an inevitable problem and contact somebody able to help you in time: academic advisor, Dean of Students, student psychologist. To report study delay you can make an appointment with a Dean of Students at the Student Desk
Preventing study delay
To successfully study, you need to have all your other things straight. A well-balanced private life: try to find a correct mixture of efforts and recreation. Plan time for sports, social contacts, going out, cultural activities, holidays, studying, household work and your sideline (in random order). See to it that you don't work too hard at the expense of your study or other things. You can still work the rest of your life. Get your priorities right with all your activities and your material needs.
See to it, to get all things directly affecting your attending the lectures straight. Inquire about your rights and duties. It is of major importance to sign up in time for the exams, to report address changes, to directly report study delays, to sign up for study groups, etc. You should also know where to find important information. There are countless possibilities, as Univers
(University magazine, also on line), the catalog, available at the Lecture Notes Sale or in the electronic study guide. A special site for first year students has been constructed.
Keep in mind that at Tilburg University a growing number of things must or can be arranged through the internet and e-mail. This carries from applications and looking for information to the actual attending of lectures.
If you e-mail to university staff, always use your Tilburg University e-mail account. You will be e-mailed from university only at your Tilburg University account, so check this regularly.
